The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted operational licences to 11 new private universities, further expanding the nation’s higher education sector. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this to State House Correspondents following the 24th Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. The minister stated that the 11 universities met all the National Universities Commission’s 13-step approval process requirements.

- Monarch University, Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, also announced that the Federal Government has put a temporary hold on granting new licenses for private universities. However, this suspension does not apply to institutions that are already in the advanced stages of the approval process.
He clarified that universities that have undergone the second phase of assessment will still be considered, and if they meet all the requirements, they will be approved. According to him, some more institutions are expected to receive approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in the coming months.
Dr Tunji Alausa acknowledged that many applicants have already invested significant resources into their proposed universities, and the government remains committed to reviewing their cases carefully.
