List of Courses Offered at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education

Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, located in Owerri, Imo State, has a long-standing reputation for training teachers and advancing education in Nigeria. The institution started in 1963 as the Advanced Teachers Training College, created to address the country’s need for more qualified educators. Over the years, it grew in importance, and in 1973, it was renamed Alvan Ikoku College of Education in honor of the renowned educationist, Alvan Ikoku, who played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s education system.
For decades, the college focused on training teachers by offering the National Certificate in Education (NCE). In 1984, partnered with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to award Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degrees.
However, a breakthrough came in October 2023 when the Federal Government officially upgraded the institution to a full-fledged university. This change meant Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education could now award its degrees and operate as an independent university.
With this new status, the university expanded its academic programs, offering courses across various faculties, including:
- Faculty of Arts
- Faculty of Social and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Education
- Faculty of Specialized Education
- Faculty of Sciences
- Faculty of Vocational and Technology Education
